The trust's second and latest initiative is the construction of Super Speciality Hospital, Gurukulam Institution of Medical Sciences - construction is fast progressing in Aimuri, Perumbavoor, and is expected to be opened up for the public by 2015. With the intention of upgrading to a full-fledged Medical College, this hospital is designed by Shri Sasidhar, Delhi, the eminent architect , who is a pioneer in designing exclusively medical colleges. The proposed hospital, is fast inching towards an international level advanced centre of excellence in cancer research. This hospital when opened up will be the second Radio - Therapy - Specialised Hospital in Ernakulam District .
Gurudeva Institute of Medical Science(GIMS) is a 300 bedded super speciality multi-disciplined referral hospital being built under the aegis of Sree Narayana Gurukulam Trust at Aimuri, Perumbavoor, intended to provide a consummate range of diagnostic and treatment solutions. The campus is spread over 25 acres of land, proposed to be a 150 crore project in an area of 3 lakh sq ft of built up land.
Furnished with world class technology, GIMS is proposed to have highest world class standards in health care solutions. Supported and prompted by high class professional medical experts, the hospital will be a beacon of hope for the people of Kerala and afar. This hospital is going to be upgraded in the future to be a well flourished medical college.
This super speciality hospital will be having the most advanced radio-therapy treatment with GAMMA CAMERA installed with the department. With GAMMA KNIFE the radiation can be administrated on the exact point of the malignant tumour whereby surrounding unaffected cells are left safe and healthy. In this case DNA of the affected cells are not allowed to replicate and divide bringing forth 'metastasis'. Metastasis is tell tale sign of cancer. This is one of the most advanced treatment on the radiation frontier. Very few hospitals at present are having GAMMA KNIFE' facility.
The Hospital provide six specialities.
- Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery
- Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- General Surgery (Minimal Invasive Surgery)
- Oncology
- Orthopaedics
- Nuerology and Nuero-Surgery
1. DEPARTMENT OF CARDIOLOGY
The hospital is having a well-equipped Cardiology Department. The hospital will be provided with a full fledged cardiac care unit with Central Monitoring and Invasive Haemo-Dialysis Monitoring Systems. This offers a world-class-state of art technology for various cardiological solutions including Digital Cardiac Angiographic Lab, Electro-Physiology Lab, 64 Slice Cardiac CT Angiographic facilities, high definition color doppler Echo-Cardiography etc. All the cardiac procedures will be available at the hospital. Angiograms, Angioplasty with stenting, Rhythm Management, Electro-Physiological studies, Radio-frequency Ablation, Pacemaker Implants etc will be performed.
ANGIOGRAM AND ANGIOPLASTY
The Cardio-Vascular department will have the facility for Angiogram and Angioplasty on a routine basis. The catheter lab will be fully adapted for these. Angiogram is a diagnostic procedure to evaluate arterial blood vessels. An Angiogram of the coronary arteries is called in layman's language 'Heart Catheterization'. In plain terms Angiogram is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure enabling the doctor to view inside of one's arteries and larger vessels. He can see narrowing, blocking, anuerism and other problems, that may not be detected in non-invasive proceduress such as x-ray, CT Scan, Ultra-sound. Angioplasty on the other hand is a minimally invasive corrective procedure that can sometimes correct the problems found during an Angiogram. Angioplasty is usually performed along with Angiogram. Stents may or may not be used in an Angioplasty procedure.
CARDIAC SURGERY
All complicated surgeries will be performed in this department. Aortic surgeries including total aortic arch replacements will be one noted feature of the multi-tasked hospital. Aortic Anuerism, Mitral valve repair program will be conducted. An exclusive cardiac theater, cardiac ICU as well as peri-operation facilities of high standards, heart bye-pass surgery will be another sterling point with the department.
Different types of complicated cardio-vascular surgeries intends to be conducted in GIMS.
- Trans myocardial laser-revascularisation (TMR)
- Heart valvular repair or replacements
- Arrhythemia treatments
- Anuerysm repair
- Surgery to place Ventricular assist Diseases
- Open Hearat Surgery
- Off pump Hearat Surgery
CORONORY ARTERY BYPASS GRAFTING (CABG)
Cardiac Surgery department will be conducting CABG. This surgical process is done to cure patients with coronory diseases. A waxy substance called plaque fills inside the arteries and in due course block the passageways. It's through the arteries oxygen rich blood is supplied to the heart. Accumulation of plaque inside the arteries narrow down the pathway of the arteries and cause obstruction to the flow of blood. This is prime reason for cardiac arrest/attack. Surgeons graft an artery or vein normally from leg and graft it to the blocked artery so that blood flows uninterrupted through the new grafted artery/vein. This surgery has become quite common nowadays.
2. OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY
The hospital will be provided with a highly competent obstetrics surgery team, capable of handling any complicated high end pregnency or complicated cases with minimal stress. The department irrespective of age will be looking after the women patients, councel and reassure them in stress situations. Cases of laproscopic hysterectomy for fibroid ovarian tumours, endometriosis etc. will be handled with extreme sentivity and finesse. The hospital will be lending total support for high end-risk pregnencies and painless labour.
3. GENERAL SURGERY/MINIMAL INVASIVE SURGERY
The department will be having a highly competent surgical staff to face any complicated situation with full fledged state of the art theater facilities, ICU functioning 24x7 days. The hospital will have the facility to conduct Laproscopic/minimally invasive surgery. This surgery is becoming quite popular now due to it's main advantages. This is performed through tiny incisions instead of big openings. Since incisions are small speedy recovery and less discomfort for the patients are felt than with conventional surgeries. Moreover the scar tissue will be quite minimal. And non-identifiable. The patient can leave the hospital within 48 hours after the surgery. This is the pronounced advantage of the laproscopic surgery.
4. ONCOLOGY
ONCOLOGY, the branch of medicine that treat cancer is going to be one of the high profile departments of GISM. All the procedural pathways of oncology will be carried out in this hospital. The following is the normal procedure carried out once a patient is dicharged from the Oncology department. These are taken care at the hospital immaculately.
- The diagnosis of cancer in any person (pathological procedures).
- Mode of therapy (eg; surgery, chemotherapy, radio-therapy or any other modalities of treatment).
- Follow up of cancer patients after recuperation.
- Palliative care for cancer patients with terminal malignancies.
- Ethical isssues surrounding cancer care of patients.
- Screening efforts of populations or the relations of patients(in types of cancer that is believed to have heriditary base for eg; breast cancer).
All the comprehensive modalities of cancer treatments will be addressed in this hospital.
- Radio-Therapy
- Chemo-Therapy
- Brachy-Therapy
- Onco-Surgery
Radio-therapy is going to be a high profile department. Radiotherapy is a treatment for cancer using high -energy radiation, usually X-rays. The type and amount of radiation that one receive is carefully calculated to damage the cancer cells, which are abnormal cells. This stops the cells from dividing properly and as a result they are destroyed. Patient's treatment is planned in such a way that as much healthy tissue is kept safe from radiation hazard. However some healthy tissue is affected causing side-effects. The purpose of radiotherapy is to destroy cancer cells while causing as little damage as possible to normal cells. It can be used to treat many kinds of cancer in almost any part of the body.
Curative treatment, which is sometimes called radical treatment, aims to give long-term benefits to people. Sometimes radiotherapy is given on its own or it may be given alongside other treatment. Radiotherapy may be given before surgery to shrink a tumour or after surgery to stop the growth of cancer cells that may remain. It can also be given before, during or after chemotherapy or hormone treatment to improve overall results. Palliative treatment aims to shrink tumours and reduce pain or relieve other cancer symptoms. Palliative radiotherapy may also prolong life.
Risks of Radiotherapy
- Radiotherapy can damage or destroy normal cells as well as destroying cancer cells and cause treatment side effects. Most side effects are temporary.
- The doctor will not advise to have any treatment unless the benefits – control of disease and relief from symptoms – are greater than the known risks.
- Any side effects which occur during treatment are usually temporary. There may be a small risk of long-term, or late, permanent effects from radiotherapy. However, side effects are rarely severe.
- The patient should not become pregnant before or during radiotherapy because radiotherapy may injure the foetus, especially in the first three months of a pregnancy. If the patient is pregnant she may discuss the matter with her doctor. The doctor will also be able to advise you on how long you should wait after radiotherapy before becoming pregnant.
- Some doctors advise men against fathering a child during radiotherapy and for a few months afterwards. Once the department starts functioning all these issues will be taken care with utmost care.
Chemo-therapy is a part of the Radio-therapy treatment. Chemo-therapy is an unavoidable way of treatment of cancer. At Gurudeva Institute Chemotherapy will be an essential part of treatment for the patients. Chemo is the drugs used for cancer treatment. There are around 200 different types of cancer and about 50 types of chemo drugs available, Chemo may be given in the form of intravenous drugs, tablets or capsules. Chemo kills cells that are in the process of dividing into two new cells. Normal tissues grow like this.
But cancer cells divide frequently and uncontrollably. These cancer cells are easily killed by chemo drugs. The cells accumulate to form a mass of cells and these form into a lump or tumour. Chemo is given to the patients in various ways.
- An injection into the blood stream(usually through a vein)
- A dip (intraveinous injection) into the blood stream through a vein.
- Tablets and capsules.
- The injection into the blood stream circulates throughout the body and kills the unnoticed malignant cells. This is called Systemic Treatment.
Brachy-therapy is a very important procedure for cancer treatment will be carried out in the hospital. This type of treatment especially for prostate cancer is done by insertion of radio-active implants directly into the concerned tissue. This is by using targeted radiation to shrink tissues. The goal is to conform the dose to the size and shape of the target while minimising the dose to the surrounding healthy tissues. Sometimes it may be termed as internal therapy or 'Seed therapy' when treating the prostate cancer using permanently placed low-dose-rate (ldr) the radiation damages the DNA Structure within the cancer cells, inhibiting their ability to grow and divide. Brachytherapy is used to treat cancers of the prostate, cervix, endomestrium, breast, skin, broonchus, oesophagus, head and neck as well as soft tissue sarcomas.
Onco-Surgery all types of surgeries are carried out in Gurudeva Institute as part of Radiation treatments. Surgical oncology is a division of Oncology dealing with surgical management of cancers. Surgery was the earliest and most time-tested treatment modality for wide range of cancers. Most solid tumours require surgery as a main part of their treatment to achieve meaningful results and cure. Over the decades it has evolved as one of the most important surgical specialities.
The main cancers, which require the services of surgical oncology division are, Head and Neck cancers, Breast cancers, Gastro Intestinal cancers, Thoracic malignancies, Genito-urinary malignancies, Soft tissue and bony tumors and Nervous system tumors, which include brain and spinal cord. Most advanced radio-therapy treatment will be available here. The facility of GAMMA CAMERA is attached to the department. Through Gamma knife the radiation to the exact point of tumor or the nearest area can be done so that the healthy nearby tissues are left out of radiation damage.
5. Orthopaedics department will be a tertiary referral center with 24 hr trauma care. The department encompasses trauma care center, prosthetic unit, physiotherapy, sports medicine etc. The department will be facilitated with all sorts of surgeries including reconstructive surgeries, sports injury treatments. In due course the department of orthopaedics will be bludgeoning into one of the finest in the state for all orthopaedic and sports injury medicines.
6. Nuerology department will be rooted on a very strong foundation of accademic, clinical and research excellence intended to serve each and every patient utmost care.
